This micro pub truly lives up to the title. Measuring approximately 70sqm, the space spans two levels, each only 35sqm, and featuring its own bar. Highly designed and detailed by Alter Space, the project is a great success, having been extensively celebrated in the Melbourne design award circuit.
With its tiled walls, brickwork and jaunty awning, Rutherford's Corner looks like its been a pub its whole life. But before the Malvern East bar opened, the building had another life as an electrical showroom and office.
Downstairs feels like a public bar thanks to timber, exposed brick and tiled floors. Upstairs is more plush, with wainscoting, velvet armchairs in various shades of green and illustrations of British Colonial scenes,that together create an atmosphere of an old world pub.
One of the biggest challenges of the space was to be able to cater for enough patrons to make it worthwhile. At a capacity of 50, this was a huge effort for all involved, as such a small space wouldn’t usually be able to support this amount of people. Micro it is, but the venue punches heavily above its weight, and is definitely a place to experience if you’re in Melbourne.
